Sri Lanka Police today commenced destroying over 900 kilograms of cocaine seized by the Police Narcotics Bureau during a raid conducted in 2016. The procedure to destroy 928.229 kilograms of cocaine commenced in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Insee Ecocycle, a waste management company in the Katunayake Investment Promotion Board. The cocaine stock, reported to be the largest ever cocaine haul seized in South, was discovered on 9 December 2016 in a container aboard a vessel that was on a voyage from Ecuador to Munrah Harbor in India via Colombo.
The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) with the cooperation of Sri Lanka Customs conducted the raid when the India-bound ship docked at the island’s main Colombo Port. After taking legal action, the Attorney-General was informed and the destruction of the cocaine commenced under the supervision of Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara The destruction of drugs is carried out under special instructions so as not to damage the environment or cause harm to the public. The cocaine is first dissolved in a chemical at the Insee Ecocycle facilty in Katunayake and the liquidized drug will be destroyed at its facility in Puttalam by heating it to 2,000 degrees Celsius.
